Before setting up operations, consider how will trains be directed? A Dispatcher using Time Table & Train Orders, Track warrants, or a full CTC Machine with line side signals? What will the Dispatcher do? Do I need a special office? How will you develop a schedule? What prototype information is available? What else will I need? How will I decide what jobs we will have? How will you call crews? Will seniority have a part in deciding who gets what job? Have you considered a Train Order Board? What about Train Orders, Engine Cards, Caboose Cards, Bad Order Forms, Forms 19 and 31? How will my operators be trained? How will they hold on to all this paperwork? I will share experiences I have had operating on other railroads and what I have implemented.
