In this introduction to Scratchbuilding with wood, Howard Goodwin, MMR, assisted by the MWTM team will take you through the steps of building a loading dock and attached ramp that can be used for a siding to unload boxcars, or in conjunction with a boxcar used as a lineside or offline storage unit. Construction will consist of basswood dimensional lumber which the student will cut to fit the plans instructions. This is a great project for those who are either new or experienced at working with wood construction and will find this a very useful project for their model railroad. The student will also color or stain according to individual taste with assistance from the team. While this project will be built in HO Scale, most any other scale can be adaptable and built.                                            Please note: if you take this clinic you may also want to take MWTM - "BUILDING A FREIGHT CAR SHED" and build it to marry with this project.   Required Tools Participants Must Provide: • Self-Healing cutting mat 8 ½” X 12” or larger • #1 Hobby knife with new #11 blades • Single edge razor blades • Hobby square • Fine tipped tweezers (not hemostats) • Scale rule • Assortment of paint brushes, #2 or smaller • Sanding sticks or flat files
• Fine sandpaper 400-600 grit. Students need to bring their own tools in order to participate in these clinics. Bring any other tools you usually use or might find useful. Optional tools: Optivisor, extra work light. These are handy tools which you could use in our clinics, but it is not essential that you buy them just for this week. It is your option! A good way to carry all of these tools is to buy a small inexpensive plastic tackle box. These are usually available at department stores year-round. Please note: an updated tool list may be sent to you the week prior to the convention or on the Convention web site. If not listed here, we will provide materials such as glues and paint.
