Blending Backgrounds and Foregrounds: Scenery Techniques for the Last 6" of Your Layout.
In the last 6" of your layout scenery as it approaches the backdrop, the goal is to form a smooth realistic transition from the 3-D models and scenery to the (often), 2-D vertical backdrop. At the same time, your background should continue the "illusion of reality" that your are trying to create with your scenery. This clinic will look at ways to handle these challenges through a few easy techniques and by examining many photographs in well over 150 layout visits over the years.

What will the Dispatcher do? Do I need a special office? How will you develop a schedule? What prototype information is available? What else will I need? How will I decide what jobs we will have? How will you call crews? Will seniority have a part in deciding who gets what job? Have you considered a Train Order Board? What about Train Orders, Engine Cards, Caboose Cards, Bad Order Forms, Forms 19 and 31? How will my operators be trained? How will they hold on to all this paperwork? I will share experiences I have had operating on other railroads and what I have implemented.

MWTM: Building A Freight Car Shed - HO Only
In this introduction to Scratchbuilding with wood, Howard Goodwin, MMR, assisted by the MWTM team will take you through the steps of building a loading dock and attached ramp that can be used for a siding to unload boxcars, or in conjunction with a boxcar used as a lineside or offline storage unit. Construction will consist of basswood dimensional lumber which the student will cut to fit the plans instructions. This is a great project for those who are either new or experienced at working with wood construction and will find this a very useful project for their model railroad. The student will also color or stain according to individual taste with assistance from the team. While this project will be built in HO Scale, most any other scale can be adaptable and built.                                            Please note: if you take this clinic you may also want to take MWTM - "BUILDING A FREIGHT CAR SHED" and build it to marry with this project.   Required Tools Participants Must Provide: • Self-Healing cutting mat 8 ½” X 12” or larger • #1 Hobby knife with new #11 blades • Single edge razor blades • Hobby square • Fine tipped tweezers (not hemostats) • Scale rule • Assortment of paint brushes, #2 or smaller • Sanding sticks or flat files
• Fine sandpaper 400-600 grit. Students need to bring their own tools in order to participate in these clinics. Bring any other tools you usually use or might find useful. Optional tools: Optivisor, extra work light. These are handy tools which you could use in our clinics, but it is not essential that you buy them just for this week. It is your option! A good way to carry all of these tools is to buy a small inexpensive plastic tackle box.  These are usually available at department stores year-round. Please note: an updated tool list may be sent to you the week prior to the convention or on the Convention web site. If not listed here, we will provide materials such as glues and paint.

What NMRA Members Really Want
A few years ago (and updated this year) the Northeastern Region asked its members what they thought, what they liked and what they didn’t, and what they really wanted from the NER and their own division. We received more than 300 survey responses, and used this data in developing a longer term, strategic plan for the Region. We’ve made considerable change since then, and real progress on a number of our objectives (convention, newsletter, website, membership, governance) – though we still have a good deal of work to do. If you’re interested in improving the NMRA experience for all, and making your Region or Division more valuable to members, then please join us for this lively discussion, share your questions and good ideas, and help us build a stronger and better NMRA!

Learning to Love Scratch Building – Welcome to the Dark Side!
This clinic is for those who want to learn how to scratch-build that favorite prototype that the manufacturers are ignoring. You will learn that scratch building is not a four-letter word but rather a skill you can develop with some time and effort. Mark has been modeling prototype railroads for 45+ years. Along the way, Mark developed the ability to scratch build almost anything. Have you ever seen a prototype that you really wanted on your layout? Ever wish you had a specific piece of rolling stock in your train? Come and learn how to create that favorite prototype. The techniques you will learn can be used in any scale to build anything. Mark will take you through several of his past projects that have won contests sponsored by the NMRA and the National Narrow Gauge Convention. Come on over to the "dark side" and learn to scratch build.

Layouts – James Gronwald (HO), Tim Morris (HO), Lynn Stringham (G)
Morris – Tim’s HO layout is in a room 47 x 15 feet.  He has approximately 140 feet of mainline track and his structures are beautiful.  His layout is 99% complete and the time frame is the late 1960’s. Tim controls his layout by walk around DC.  He will have trains running on a layout designed for both operation and just running trains.  Enter the layout room by following a path on the south side of the yard and go through an open gate and down the outside stairs to the welcome area on the basement level.

Stringham – The L&M Railroad has been in operation for ten years and was constructed around two sides of the patio to maximize viewing and operation. The center feature of the railroad is a pond - less waterfall and stream. There is 350 ft. of track in a double track figure 8 using a curved trestle to cross over. There are two crossovers connecting the double tracks and a reversing track that connects the two outer loops. Trains are stored in a basement room on a track that passes through a window to a connecting spur. The garden has a number of different flowers, shrubs, trees and ground covers. This gives an ever changing landscape throughout growing season. There is a small track side village where commuters grab a snack and wait for the next express to the city. Trains are battery powered and controlled by a 2.4 GHz R/C throttle. (Revolution by Precision RC Electronics Inc.)

Gronwald – James models the D&RGW coal hauling in the Soldier Summit area in the 1950 - 60’s era.  The room is a basement room 14 x 20 feet with a dog leg of 13 x 19 feet.  He has around 300 feet of double mainline track. This part of the layout is about 80% done and James's has done some outstanding hand carved mountain work which you must see.  The backdrop scenery paintings by Rob Spangler are spectacular.  In May of 2013 James started construction of the second phase of his layout which is the SLC area with a lot of industrial sidings.  This area is about the same size as his first phase.  James has also added a lot of scenery and buildings to the town of Green River.  Control is Digitrax DCC.

Because there is a big difference between cameras and their lenses, I will talk about what camera to use in real life images for correct perspective at Track Level, Aerial View, or from a Mountain Top. What continuity you may require between modular. What detail to look for to make your town recognizable to others and what you do not need.

MWTM – Making Foreground Trees. Cost: $48 Max. of 28
In this workshop, Jim Gore will teach you how make two different types of foreground trees with enough detail to make them stand out at the edge of the layout or on your next diorama.  Before construction, we will discuss a little botany and plant ecology and the effects of elevation and exposure to what are the appropriate species and varieties to be “planted” on the layout.  We will also discover appropriate colors for every season. Then, we will make two types of trees, a conifer/pine tree made from balsa and caspia, as well as a deciduous tree, using SuperSage armatures and SuperTrees.  A variety of “leaf” materials will be provided.                                                                                                                                         Required Tools Participants Must Provide: • Hot glue pot (not a hot glue gun)  OR  Medium Viscosity CA Glue AND Accelerator (Zap-A-Gap, for example) • Extension cord or power strip • Fine-pointed tweezers/forceps • Hobby knife with #11 blade • Small scissors • Pin-vise and drill bits (especially #68 and larger) • CA (super) glue (something like Gorilla super-glue, medium viscosity, will be fine).
Please note; an updated tool list may be sent to you the week prior to the convention or on the Convention web site. If not listed here, we will provide materials such as glues and paint.

Union Pacific's Historic Overland Route - America's First Transcontinental Railroad
Created by the signing of the Pacific Railroad Act by President Abraham Lincoln on July 1, 1862, the Union Pacific is the only major railroad in the United States still functioning under its original name. UP's first route was the eastern leg of America's first transcontinental railroad from Omaha, Nebraska to Promontory, Utah where it met the Central Pacific from California on May 10, 1869. Known as the Overland Route, this busy line is today UP's main east/west route, and includes the former Chicago & NorthWestern from Omaha & Council Bluffs east to Chicago. In this presentation we follow the UP west from Chicago to Utah via such historic railroad centers as Council Bluffs, Omaha, North Platte, Cheyenne and Green River. UP's unique motive power and colorful trains are the highlights of this journey.

History of the Royal Gorge War Between the Santa Fe and D&RG Railroads
The Colorado Railroad War, also known as the Royal Gorge Railroad War, was fought in the late 1870s between the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and the smaller Denver and Rio Grande company. In 1878, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe was competing against the Denver and Rio Grande to put the first line through Raton Pass. Both railroads had extended lines into Trinidad, Colorado and the pass was the only access to continue on to New Mexico. There was a great deal of legal maneuvering, and even threatened violence between rival gangs of railroad workers. To break the impasse, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe hired a number of local gunfighters in February 1878. Faced with this threat, and running out of money, the Denver and Rio Grande was forced to cede the pass to its rivals. The initial dispute was over without a shot being fired. However, the next year a silver strike in Leadville brought the struggle back to life. Now both railroads were competing to put track along the narrow Royal Gorge.
